Paddling in Howe Sound

Paddling in Howe Sound

It was a beautiful morning paddle on the Monday of the long weekend. From Squamish to Woodfibre (disused pulp mill), the ocean was like a mirror with a low mist on the water. Seals with their pups played on the shore and bald eagles soared above. The group explored the estuary in the sunshine and then cruised down with the river flow around the spit and back to Nexen beach before the notorious Squamish wind picked up at lunch time.

Yesterday we took part in the 2nd Squamish Paddling Club twoonie kayak race. The race had great participation and perfect weather, the short course racing from Nexen Beach to the Yacht club and back and the long course going up to the adventure centre and back. There was about 20 racers, one stand up paddler(!) and one double kayak. Draw prizes were given after the race followed by food, drinks and socializing at the Howe Sound Brew Pub. The next race will be held mid August, it’s a great way to get on the water and meet other paddlers!

Four students took the intro to white water course last weekend on the Mamquam River in Squamish. Beautiful weather and an enthusiastic group made for a fantastic weekend, most the students pulled off a roll on the first day at Alice Lake! Day two was all on the Mamquam river, paddling in the kayaking area below the dam and then doing the run down to Squamish in the afternoon.

The next intro to whitewater course is on August 14/15. email Tyson for details.

Students enjoyed a rain free weekend of paddling in Squamish at the weekend. Starting with basic strokes and safety instuction at Alice Lake on Saturday morning and moving on to the Mamquam river in the afternoon. Eddy turns, stroke practice and time spent getting used to the moving water preceded a run down the river on sunday and some surfing attempts!
